Complex Orthopedic Conditions

Research strongly supports the use of physical therapy as an effective way to manage pain and improve mobility for those with orthopedic or musculoskeletal conditions. The best medicine available is movement. It’s a safe and effective alternative to pain medication and surgery.

Whether you recently sustained an injury, or have been battling one for 10+ years, a Roots Doctor of Physical Therapy will diagnose the cause of your pain and limitations, then work with you to improve mobility and the safe return to daily activities including recreation.

At Roots, we value an evidence-based approach to care and provide hands-on manual therapy in combination with specific therapeutic exercise and movement retraining to guide your path to healing.

Pelvic Health
& Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor is made up of muscles and other tissues that form a sling from the pubic bone to the tailbone. Their main roles are to support the abdominal and pelvic organs, help maintain upright posture, and help to control bladder, bowel, and sexual activity.

These muscles may become either under-active or overused for any number of reasons (poor posture, straining to void, childbirth, past injury, or surgery). Often, pelvic floor dysfunction can exist without an obvious or known cause. The result is called Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and can result in pain that affects everyday activities and quality of life.

Pelvic floor dysfunction refers to a wide range of problems that occur when the muscles of the pelvic floor are not functioning normally. They are often too tight and/or too weak to function efficiently, and related to impairments of the lower back, sacroiliac joint, coccyx and/or hip joints known to accompany this condition.

Everyone has a pelvic floor. Roots supports pelvic floor conditions related to Men’s Health, Trans Health, Gender Affirming Procedures, Pregnancy, Fertility, and Menopause.

Postpartum

Childbirth may be the single greatest change in a woman’s life, mentally, physically, and emotionally, over a relatively short period of time. Fatigue, back pain and discomfort, lack of mobility, diastasis recti, PPD, pelvic floor pain and dysfunction, urinary incontinence, vaginal tearing, or cesarean scarring are among the many common ailments some women experience following delivery.

Education, breathing techniques and body mechanics, positioning for healing and gentle exercises may start two weeks following childbirth. Hands-on manual-therapy techniques, individualized therapeutic exercises, and movement re-training are utilized to restore mobility, stability, and strength allowing you to return to daily and recreational activities without discomfort.
